Lotoo, in many Chinese DAP manufacturers, is unique. At an era new products coming out very day, Lotoo only has a total of only three models of HIFI player on sale in the past a few years. Until last summer, with the announcement of Paw Gold Touch, Lotoo has enough players for a basketball team (which includes PICO, a sports-style player).

As Lotoo’s new flagship player, the price of Paw Gold Touch (I will call it Touch below for short) is naturally higher than the old flagship Paw Gold (Gold for short). The official price is $2600.

Lotoo’s product sound performance has always been good. The appearance of Touch as usual aroused a lot of people’s (including us) curiosity.

Design

The size of the Touch is 68.6mm x 119mm x 21mm, a little shorter than IPHONE SE, but significantly larger in width and thickness.

In terms of configuration, Touch is using AKM4497EQ decoding chip. It has no built-in storage space and supports single SD card expansion, up to 2TB. On Bluetooth it supports LDAC and two-way Bluetooth. In terms of audio format support, Touch supports DSD512 up to the maximum.

Touch uses aviation aluminum alloy fuselage with CNC technology. The overall body is square with round edges and corners. You can feel no cutting feel. The black style is minimalist with excellent workmanship. But it’s heavy in weight holding in hand. There is a Lotoo LOGO in the upper left corner of the front where a touch screen takes up the most. And the product model and a LTOS INSIDE label can be found on the back, indicates that the Touch is using the LTOS system, which we will talk about later. There are grooves on the left and right sides of the body to improve grip stability.

On the top of the body is the volume knob, 3.5MM single-ended headphone port (integrated line output function) and 4.4MM balance headphone port (integrated line output function), all of which are in very eye-catching gold color. Especially the knob are designed with the Apollo pattern on the surface, with a breathing light at the bottom.

According to Lotoo, the two headphone ports are using different operational amplifier from Texas Instruments. 3.5MM port is using LME49600, 4.4MM is using OPA1622. The maximum output power of both are 500mW.

There is nothing on the left side. On the right side, there are the previous song /forward key, play / pause key, next song / rewind key and power key. The play/pause key and the power key both have a dot on it to help blind control.

At the bottom is an SD card slot and a TYPE-C port. SD card slot supports up to 2TB UHS-II SD card. The theory max transmission rate of UHS-II SD card is up to 312M/S. The official claims that the measured transmission speed can reach 300M/S. In addition to charging, the TYPE-C port also supports USB data transmission.

The Touch’s screen uses Corning Gorilla fifth-generation glass with 9H ADLC diamond coating on the surface. The screen also has a dredging coating, which can better prevent stains and fingerprints. The screen is 3.77 inch IPS LCD screen, with a resolution of 480X800, the display effect is delicate. In terms of function, gain adjustment, filtering, frequency-lifting, EQ adjustment, left and right balance adjustment and other functions are available.

The Touch’s battery capacity is 5400mAH, claimed a battery life of about 10 hours. My actual test result is about the same. It can be fully charged in about 2 hours.

The start-up time of Touch is very fast, about 3 seconds. Its operating system is LOTOO OS, or short as LTOS. The response is quick, the interface is simple and clear. The operating logic is more reasonable. You can double-click to wake-up the screen and slide up from the bottom of the screen to go back to the main interface. The width of the Touch is suitable, a bit thick with 293g weight. For a smaller hands, one-handed operation is not particularly convenient, so the grip can only be good.

Listening experience

Sources: ZX100, ZX100 + PHA3, HM901S, Lotoo Paw Gold Touch
Headphones: SONY MDR-EX1000
Audio format: FLAC

Treble brightness is sufficient. The extension and strength are very good. The shape of sound is clear and transient is precise. Smoothness is no problem, softness is better than the previous generation of flagship Gold. With EX1000 treble is relatively high, with headphones emphasize treble, the experience will be more exciting. The softness of headset with better bass will be a little more, but the brightness will drop.

The vocal distance is moderate with a very good feel of singer. There is some kind of particles sense, but that did not affect the smoothness. Vocal details are rich and delicate. With EX10000, male and female voices are good to listen, feels young.

Bass volume is neutral, about the same amount, which did not show a strong sense of atmosphere. But it’s good in transients, rebounds and cohesion, better than HM901S.

The resolution is very good, significantly stronger than HM901S. The sound field and separation is very good too, in every directions. The feeling of being surrounded is more obvious, compared to HM901S. The upgrade is relatively easy to perceive.

On other aspects, there is no obvious background noise. High sound density, clean, overall balanced, dynamic transients are good.

When using balanced port, with SONY M9, relative to single port, the overall momentum is better. Density and permeability has a certain increase. Treble appears to be thinner. Vocal density has a small increase, but M9’s bass volume is already enough. The balanced output enhanced the volume and width of bass. The overall result will appear particularly rich.

Paired with more balanced DK 3001, the performance is a reinforced version of the single port. The style change is not much and the overall quality has a certain improvement. Bass volume and overall permeability, density, stretch has a small increase. High frequency also appears to be more permeable. The vocal image is a little clearer. The feeling of being surrounded by the sound field is more obvious.

Summary

As the new flagship of Lotoo, compared to previous generations of products, all aspects of its changes are more obvious. First of all, the design has large changes, followed by the use of touch screen and LTOS system. So that the Paw Gold Touch, compared to the previous generations of “nerd” products, is clearly different. It’s more modern and fashionable. The actual control is more suitable for the current logic of use. The hardware quality is significantly stronger than 901S, which is what a 2018 flagship player should be. In terms of tuning, the Touch has a more balanced atmosphere than the previous product’s clean and slender style. The power is enough to handle most of portable headphones. Combination with various types of headphones are OK.
